How to Scan a QR Code on a Computer

The easiest way to scan a QR code on a computer, Windows, Mac, or Chromebook, is the QR code scanner on this site. No app or phone required. It works two ways: uploading an image of the code, or pointing your webcam at a physical one.

Option 1: Upload an image

1. Save or screenshot the QR code as an image file.
2. Open the QR code scanner.
3. Click to upload the file, or drag it onto the page.
4. The decoded content appears right away.

This works identically on Windows, Mac, and Chromebook, since it's just uploading a file to a webpage, nothing operating-system specific.

Option 2: Use your webcam

1. Open the QR code scanner and click "Use camera."
2. Allow camera access when your browser asks.
3. Hold the physical QR code up to your webcam until it's in focus.
4. It decodes automatically once recognized.

This is useful when the code is printed on paper or a package in front of you, rather than already saved as an image on your computer.

Windows

Both options above work in any modern browser on Windows. If your laptop or external webcam works for video calls, it'll work for scanning.

Mac

Same as Windows: both the upload and webcam options work in Safari, Chrome, or any modern browser. macOS may ask you to confirm camera access for your browser the first time.

Chromebook

Chromebooks handle this the same way, since it all runs through the browser. If your Chromebook has a front camera, the webcam option works; otherwise, upload a screenshot or a photo taken on another device.
