How does a WhatsApp QR code work?

It encodes a standard "wa.me" link with your phone number (and optionally a pre-filled message). Scanning it opens WhatsApp with a chat to that number ready to go.

Do I need to include the country code?

Yes — always include your country code with a leading + (e.g. +1 555 123 4567). We never guess a country code, since an assumed one would produce a broken link.

Can I pre-fill a message?

Yes — anything typed in the optional message field will appear pre-filled in the chat when scanned.

Is this connected to WhatsApp's official API?
