How much text fits, and when to use a link instead

A QR code can technically store a few thousand characters, but density goes up fast as you add more text, which makes the pattern harder to scan and harder to print small. For a code someone scans from arm's length, keep it under roughly 200 to 300 characters. Past that, print it larger or trim the message down.

Plain text works well for anything short and self-contained: a Wi-Fi-free pairing code, a locker combination, a quote for a poster, instructions that don't need a click. Once the content runs long, or you want to update it later without reprinting, a link to a QR code pointing at a page you control is the better tool.
